We're going to start with a biggie. The diaper bag. Or more specifically, the day you can ditch it for good.
One of the biggest transitions I had to make as a mom was the transition to all the kid gear. And not just in the house, but all the stuff that was seemingly required to leave the house. You needed changes of clothes, diapers, wipes, bottles, nursing cover, pacifiers and back-up pacifiers (in the event of loss), snacks, entertainment. And if we were traveling, add in doubles of all of that plus a thermometer, the basic baby drugs, and formula. Occasionally I'd throw a few of my own personal belongings in there, but I usually limited it to my wallet, keys, phone, and lip gloss.
Now, handbags - namely, large beautifully constructed handbags - are one of the great loves of my life. I can rarely think of an occasion to downsize, and as a new mom I found myself opting out of my purse more often than not. I even took my diaper bag to into the office because at the time it felt easier to just throw my laptop in there (the bag was obviously large enough to accommodate it) rather than move my things to a purse.
Those were sad times y'all.
So imagine my surprise when I looked up one day and I was NOT carrying a diaper bag! Full disclosure: the first time it happened, it was an accident - I didn't mean to leave the house without one. But I will say that by the time my youngest turned two, he was done with bottles, the paci, and (mostly) sippy cups. I'd been throwing some emergency snacks and juice boxes in my purse for years. And I always kept some emergency diapers/pull-ups and wipes in my car. So that first time I was perfectly okay.
Fast forward several outings, and crazy successful potty training, and I was still okay. We all were okay. We'd ditched the diaper bag because we'd gotten to the stage where we didn't need it. I still carry emergency snacks, and keep wipes in the car. But now I can do those things within the confines of my handbag.
And lemme tell you, its liberating.
